I will save you a bit of reading, in case you are in a hurry, and just tell you now to buy this book. If you want to know more before spending $33.00 on improving your shooting, collecting and other gun skills, read on.

This book was written by Boston T. Party, the well known (to Libertarians) author of such titles as You and the Police, Surviving Y2K And Other Disasters, Hologram Of Liberty and a handful of other noteworthy titles. If you want yet another glossy photo gun book, extolling all of the imaginary virtues of every firearm ever made, this is NOT the book for you. If you are after a no holds barred consumer guide to firearms, accessories, and shooting, GET IT.

Boston’s Gun Bible goes into great detail about the pros and cons of various defensive weaponry, equipment, and the philosohy behind their appropriate usage. The work is markedly political, obviously pro gun, and has a rather witty ”screw the hoplophobes” tone that I really enjoyed. The writing is crisp and to the point. Eloquent without being boring. This is a hallmark of Boston’s work, and you will not be diappointed in Boston’s Gun Bible. At about (850) pages, it can’t be considered light reading, but the subject matter is important and needs a lot of covering to get it all through to the reader in its entirety.

Included in the book is information on:

* Selecting rifles, pistols, revolvers
* Gun shows
* ATF Sting operations
* Gun nomenclature
* Sighting in
* Optics and other sights
* Women and guns
* Politics and guns
* How to cache weapons and ammo
* (And everything else you want to know, or so it seems)

I thought that the project would be rather daunting when he undertook it, but the results are well worth the money. What he ended up with is a layman’s guide/how to book for buying, selling, choosing, caring for, KEEPING, shooting and enjoying firearms of all types, but especially those that are ”Liberty’s Teeth”. Especially valuable is the section detailing the merits and faults of various modern semi auto rifle systems. What you will NOT find in this book is ANY hint of advertising $$$ influence, chicanery, or editorial falderal.

Boston knows his subject, and covers it exhaustively.

Did I mention that you should buy it? –Kevin (Mad Dog) McClung, knifemaker and gunsmith

Burrough, an award-winning financial journalist and Vanity Fair special correspondent, best known for Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco, switches gears to produce the definitive account of the 1930s crime wave that brought notorious criminals like John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde to America’s front pages. Burrough’s fascination with his subject matter stems from a family connection—his paternal grandfather manned a roadblock in Arkansas during the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde—and he successfully translates years of dogged research, which included thorough review of recently disclosed FBI files, into a graceful narrative. This true crime history appropriately balances violent shootouts and schemes for daring prison breaks with a detailed account of how the slew of robberies and headlines helped an ambitious federal bureaucrat named J. Edgar Hoover transform a small agency into the FBI we know today. While some of the details (e.g., that Dillinger got a traffic ticket) are trivial, this book compellingly brings back to life people and times distorted in the popular imagination by hagiographic bureau memoirs and Hollywood. Burrough’s recent New York Times op-ed piece drawing parallels between the bureau’s “reinvention” in the 1930s and today’s reform efforts to combat the war on terror will help attract readers looking for lessons from history.
New Yorker correspondent Mayer (Strange Justice) details the battle within the Bush Administration over a new anti-terrorism policy of harsh interrogations, indefinite detentions without due process, extraordinary renditions, secret CIA prisons and warrantless wiretappings. Fighting with memos and legal briefs, Mayer reports, hard-liners led by Dick Cheney, his aide David Addingtion and then-Justice Department lawyer John Yoo rejected any constraints on the treatment of prisoners or limitations on presidential power in fighting terrorism, while less militant administration lawyers invoked the Constitution and international law to oppose their initiatives. As a counterpoint to the wrangling over the definition of torture and the Geneva Conventions, the author looks at the use of techniques like waterboarding, stress positions, sleep deprivation and sexual humiliation against prisoners by the American military and CIA; her chilling account compellingly argues that this “enhanced interrogation” regimen constitutes torture. The result is a must-read: a meticulous behind-the-scenes reconstruction of policymaking that demonstrates how legal abstractions became an ugly reality.
This harrowing, turbocharged account of undercover life is reminiscent of Joseph D. Pistone’s Donnie Brasco. After military service in Vietnam, Queen began his law enforcement career, eventually spending 20 years as an ATF special agent. In 1998, through contact with a “confidential informant,” he began to hang with the Mongol Nation, a violent Southern California motorcycle club (“a tight-knit collective of crazies, unpredictable and unrepentant badasses”) with 20 chapters in several states and 350 members both in and out of prison. Assuming the role of bearded biker “Billy St. John,” Queen entered into a 28-month undercover operation. To gather evidence of homicide, weapons and narcotics violations, he sometimes wore a wire, knowing that its discovery could lead to his murder. Indeed, he was suspected at first of being a cop and forced to prove himself in more than a few dangerous situations. But after months of hazing, he became a trusted member. Queen steers clear of melodrama and captures both sides of his double life; the sadistic characters and criminal camaraderie are contrasted with his own inner turmoil, as he thought of the Mongols as his friends while the investigation escalated. The strength and white-hot intensity of the writing make this read like a movie, and Hollywood is certain to take note. 16 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW. (On sale Apr. 5)
